I am horrified

The school system in Utah sucks. We all know that. The Utah state legislature just cut 28 million out of the school budget this year. There are more budget cuts planned for next year. The Jordan school district had a 30 million shortfall, even before the legislature planned cutting school spending. This is in a state where the average class size is approaching 40 students. (How's that "trickle-down economics" working out for you, Utah?)

But I'm also horrified at the public system in the US in general too. That's why this blog caught my eye today. She's a teacher that is going to spend 2010 eating school lunches. She chronicles what the children are eating, along with the worst part: pictures. I was seriously nauseated looking at those pictures. My kids aren't in school yet, but I'm really worried about when that day will come. Hopefully we're in an area with better schools, which can sometimes mean mediocre at the best.

Whatever the Asian population of [the city that we live in] is, it just went up by three

We are the now the proud owners of a 2010 census. Justin is filling it out because he thinks that I might succumb to the temptation of screwing with the government's numbers. What? You mean we're not all Hmong Latinos named Zem and live in a nursing home?

Art I wish I had money for

There's not a lot of times that I lust after art, even though I like it. My favourite painting is Cloister Cemetery in the Snow which was destroyed in a 1945 bombing of Berlin, but still available in print (hint, hint Justin). But these are coming in at a close second. It's altered thrift store art. Cheap prints are bought for nothing and then altered to make them more interesting:

I LOVE this one. But I'm a huge Katamari fan.

Personally, I keep meaning to buy a poster of this painting (unaltered) but I still like this one.

Justin would like this one.

Help Risa and Mike adopt

My friends, Risa and Mike are trying to adopt. Help them by buying springs bulbs! The website is here:http://www.dutchmillbulbs.com/store.asp?pid=16690&catid=19813 Contact me or them (if you know them) if you'd like some.

Dear Utah

Explain to me how you can be a balmy 44 degrees yesterday morning and then I wake up to 10 inches of snow so heavy the snowblower is powerless?

Buried,

Miranda

PS. I hate you.
