Mourning with the world

Tonight Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley died. His presence will be missed all around the world.

Pres. Hinckley has been the prophet for the majority of my lifetime. It's hard to believe that we will no longer see his happy face and hear his gentle voice at conference. I know that he and his wife are happy to be reunited in heaven.

David Tennant is so dreamy

In declaration of my geekiness, I have to say that I love the new(er) Doctor Who. I think that David Tennant is a lot more awesome that Christopher Eccleston. However, I am too young to remember that Tom Baker Doctor. I'll have to get the DVDs or something.

There was a marathon on BBCA yesterday and I finally was able to catch up on some of the earlier episodes in this cycle before the TiVo decided to randomly start deleting them. Are Justin and I the only ones who have been watching these?

I keep offering to get Justin a pinstripe suit and Converse so he can dress up like the Doctor.

My sis and her husband and little munchkins are in town. She has doted sufficiently on Liam and Elliot. I wish that they could stay longer.

Other things I find useless

Along with bikinis in January, these are other things that I find stupid/redundant:

Page-a-day calendars that state there are 365 pages (especially since this is a leap year, so there should be 366)
TV ads that repeat the same sentence over and over eg. Akavar or Headon
Real pockets on infants's clothing (what are you going to keep in there, a spare binky?)

Today Liam decided that he wanted to be mobile and began to inch worm along the floor. Guess I'm going to have to do some serious baby proofing in the near future!

Wanted: (In)discriminating tasters

Apparently my test group for the treats that I like to make is going to be taking a hiatus soon. So I'm going to need volunteers for tasters. It would be helpful for it to be someone in this state (sorry Gwyn and Mindy!) and willing to try anything I bake.

Sit down, you're rocking the boat!

Yesterday Liam started to try to sit unsupported. He has been able to tripod for a while, but other than that, his balance hasn't been too good. However yesterday, he suddenly threw up his arms and balanced for a second before nose diving. He's getting so big.

At his four month check-up, that was a week ago, he was 15 lbs 5 oz and 24 in. He fits nicely in the 75th percentile.

The Name Game

What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.

My pregnant friend (or at least one of them) is having trouble coming up with a name for their unborn daughter. Currently, her husband refers to the baby at the "neonate".

There will no "cute" explanation for Liam's name. We named Liam such for a variety of reasons. William was a normal enough name to be acceptable, but the nickname Liam was different enough to set him apart. However it was, Liam was almost a:

Ethan
Aiden
Geoffrey
Henry

The only one that was different enough of the previous was Geoffrey. Ethan, Aiden and Henry were just a little too common for us. However, the real battle will start WHEN we have a girl. I put in an order with Justin for next time, so it's all up to him.

In the cute story department, my name supposedly was from the Ernesto Miranda v The State of Arizona decision from the Supreme Court in 1966. My mother and attorney father apparently thought it would be hi-larious to name me such. Another explanation was because my mom wanted to name me Molly (yuck!) and my dad wanted Amanda. The combination of the two was Miranda.

How else were you named/did you name your kids?

Spawn of Satan....Guess that doesn't refect well on me

It is now 11:30 at night and Justin's kid (yes you did read that right) is awake and ready to play. We've now tried three different bedtimes and each time, Liam sleeps for about an hour and then wakes up one, screaming or two, laughing like a manic. Either way, he refuses to go back to sleep until after midnight. Before I get too much advice, we have a set bedtime routine and I've tried the Ferber method. The latter results in my blood pressure rising and a great Jack-Jack impression.

Any suggestions? Here's the look that Liam's giving me right now.

Tummy time progression

Being pleasant

Still going

Starting to struggle

Godzilla!

Baby shower? Nah I prefer baths.

I'm planning a baby shower for a friend (and ex-girlfriend of Justin...nope that's not awkward) who is due in Feb. While I appreciate showers and I love catering them, let's not forget what they are all about--the presents.

I don't even want to think of the amount of money that I spent on stuff for Liam. Showers are good because it can take off some of the stress. However it don't think that it's necessary to embarrass the guests with terrible games like trying to pin a safety pin as far up your back a possible. That's just not cool.

Anyway, I'm planning on doing a duel chocolate fountain with plenty of goodies to dip. Just for the record I own my own fountains. Insert pretentious joke here.

I think I have the world's cutest kid. Not that I'm biased.

Okay, I know that people have complained about this before and that it is in no way original, but I was at Target today. Walking in the front doors, after undoing my coat, taking off my hat, and uncovering Liam's bunting, I was faced with four, count them four, racks of bikinis. It's the beginning of January! I know that retailers like to be ahead of the demand for seasonal clothing, but do they honestly earn any revenue for being that much ahead? At this point of the year, I'm still looking for sweaters for my brother-in-law and maybe some years for a spring coat. Not a cubic meter's worth of fabric to cover my otherwise freezing butt off.

Rant done. Today I'm attempting to make panna cotta. It's a Piemontese dessert somewhat like a custard without any eggs. If it works out, I'll post a link to a recipe.

Your patience, please

Due to popular request (ok, only two people), I've created a blog to document my life for the benefit of anyone who cares. Unfortunately, this template and I are at odds, so until I beat it into submission, please bear with me if anything looks funny.
