The Name Game

What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.

My pregnant friend (or at least one of them) is having trouble coming up with a name for their unborn daughter. Currently, her husband refers to the baby at the "neonate".

There will no "cute" explanation for Liam's name. We named Liam such for a variety of reasons. William was a normal enough name to be acceptable, but the nickname Liam was different enough to set him apart. However it was, Liam was almost a:

Ethan
Aiden
Geoffrey
Henry

The only one that was different enough of the previous was Geoffrey. Ethan, Aiden and Henry were just a little too common for us. However, the real battle will start WHEN we have a girl. I put in an order with Justin for next time, so it's all up to him.

In the cute story department, my name supposedly was from the Ernesto Miranda v The State of Arizona decision from the Supreme Court in 1966. My mother and attorney father apparently thought it would be hi-larious to name me such. Another explanation was because my mom wanted to name me Molly (yuck!) and my dad wanted Amanda. The combination of the two was Miranda.

How else were you named/did you name your kids?

  1. My mom says my dad saw a cute girl named Mindy at a bowling alley. My dad says there was no girl at a bowling alley- he just liked the name. I was pretty sad when I found out they also liked the name Katie, but went with Mindy instead.
